What’s the best way to get there?
By plane:
The closest airport is outside of Trieste, about 30 minutes away. It’s a small airport, but it handles international flights from a number of carriers, including Alitalia and Ryan Air. Flying into Venice is also an option, though much farther away.
By train: European train service is convenient and reliable. The closest train station to Grado is in Cervignano, a small town about 20 minutes away. From there, you’d have to take a bus to Grado.
By car: Renting cars in Italy can be pricey, and the cost of gas is very high. And remember, the prices at the pump are by the liter, not the gallon. You can rent cars at the airports.

How’s the parking situation?
Grado’s parking situation can be difficult, especially during the summer. There are some new parking garages that may alleviate the congestion a bit, but expect this difficulty to remain part of life in a busy little city. When booking a hotel, ask if they have a garage. Once in Grado, you’ll rarely need your vehicle unless you’re taking day trips. Street parking is tough, but it can be found. Once you park, go to a nearby blue parking machine and put in some change. Then place the paper receipt with the expiration time on your dashboard.

When should I go?
Depends on if you like crowds. Mid-August, when much of Italy is on vacation, is the peak of the season. The prices will also be higher during this time. Generally the season runs from mid-May to mid-September. You’ll find better deals before and after those periods.

What’s the weather like?
Grado has a fairly varied pattern of weather. You’ll get many hot, perfect beach days during the peak summer months. Rain is more likely early and late in the beach season. As in most places, some years are wetter than others, so just cross your fingers. Fortunately, Grado has many historic and cultural attractions that most resort towns can’t offer.

Can I find a newspaper?
Newspaper stands sells papers and magazines from around the world. While you may find that some sell USA Today and the New York Times, you’re more likely to find an issue of the International Herald Tribune. You’ll also find British, German and Austrian papers to go along with several Italian dailies.

How do I stay connected?
You can access the Internet from several stores and cafes throughout Grado. The cost is very reasonable if you need to find information quick. If you want to browse and you have wireless capability, Parco Delle Rose in the main beach area has free Wi-Fi access. Go after 4 p.m. if you want free admission into the park. Many hotels also offer Internet services.

How do I get money?
Leave your travelers’ checks at home. Most places take credit cards, and cash is available at ATMs, all of which have English as an option.
