GRADO
TIP

In the mood for a real cocktail? Go to Meluva on the Piazza Duca D’Aosta, where you’ll find the barkeep serving up classics like Mojitos, Mimosas and Pink Ladies. Want something stronger, and perhaps more Italian? Try a Ramazzotti on ice, a potent digestivo made in Milan.

The scene
Grado is a very vibrant community from May through September. This is especially true on weekends and throughout the summer months. Outdoor music and other evening events are usually free and open to all. On a typical summer night in Grado, the cafes that line the streets are packed with patrons sipping their digestivo (after dinner drink) at an outdoor table. Families walk the streets enjoying ice cream cones while kids play along the fountains.

Cafes
This is where you grab an outdoor table and watch the world go by. You can enjoy anything from an aperitivo (before dinner drink) to an espresso. The wine is always flowing and beer is popular, especially with visitors from Germany, Austria and Great Britain. Desserts usually include pastries, cakes and ice cream.

Wine bars
Are you serious about your wine? In many upscale wine bars in Grado, the bottles may outnumber the patrons, leading to a cozy, intimate setting. Some of our favorites are La Gardenia, the bar at Trattoria St. Lucia and Gastroenoteca de Gustibus, all in the old part of town. There are lots of local wines worth trying, such as prosecco, a dry sparkling wine, and tocai, a dry white also known as Friulano.

Music
The young crowd usually arrives in time for the weekend, and more often than not, they head for the nightclubs. The most popular of these spots is right in the main beach area while another, Guendalina Disco Club, is near the main piazza. Il Baccaro offers live music and karaoke.
