GRADO
TIP

Want to go organic? In the old part of town you'll find Eco-Nut, a tiny locally run place stacked with natural products. Foods include cheese, pastries, prepared snacks and cereal. There's plenty to choose from if you're looking for lotions, sunscreen and creams.

Clothing, shoes and accessories
Italy is world-famous for its fashion, and those tastes are on full display in every corner of historic Grado. The ancient center and beachfront area are lined with shops and boutiques, selling high-end dresses, suits, shoes and handbags. When shopping in Italy, think two things: leather and gold. Italian leather is an old favorite, and when browsing jewelry take care to remember that the standard for Italian gold is 18 carats rather than the American standard of 14.

For the kids
Since so many families come to Grado for the beach, children's clothing is easy to find. Benetton Kids is a popular spot. There are, however, more sporty and far cheaper options. There are many stores that sell reasonably priced beach clothing and toys. The soccer jerseys that hang on many storefronts make for great gifts or souvenirs.

Homewares and art
Artwork is a big draw for tourists. There are some great galleries, mostly tucked away along the cobbled streets in the old part of town. Much of this art is local, but some shops are geared toward Asian- and Indian-style decorations.

Everyday shopping
Grado is a very livable town. Many live there year-round, while others visit for weeks if not months. There are several grocery stores, which also sell many home goods. Medicines are purchased at the farmacia, labeled with a red cross. Check out Scheckler's for a variety of products, from bathroom supplies and sunscreen to diapers and toys.
